Hiya I was wondering if you could give me some advice? My sister's pregnant and our mom hasn't been giving her a ton of tips and stuff so I was just wondering if you could? (You have kids, right? I didn't make that up?) It would be her first baby and I was just curious about things we should know. This will be the first time I'm an aunt and I just want to be ready. I know I'm being kinda vague on what I want to know so any tips will be helpful or topics I should look into. Thank you in advance!
Tumblr media
Oh gosh, helloooooo!
God...tips on pregnancy, or birth, or raising? Phew. Uhf.
Okay, Midwife Brain 🧠 first:
Don't eat for two. Your body becomes more efficient at taking calories from the food you do eat. In the 3rd trimester (28 weeks+) you only tend to need around 200 calories a day more. Significant weight gain in pregnancy is a health risk factor for many things, most significantly pre-eclampsia.
If you plan to formula feed the baby, don't be conned I go buying a more expensive type. There's negligible difference. Also don't buy 'extra hungry baby's formulas. It is very very normal for a newborn to want to feed every 2-4 hours. Over stuffing them with incredibly dense 'hungry baby's formulas will just give them a tummy ache, 'colic', constipation and pushing them to sleep for very long periods of time. Regular and frequent waking is thought to be a protective mechanism against SIDS.
Always call your care provider for: Unusual and continuous headaches, abdominal pain, pain and swelling and heat and redness in one leg or groin, vaginal bleeding, heavy vaginal fluid loss, reduced movements and a generalised feeling that 'something isnt right', even if you can't put your finger on what.
Don't believe everything you read online. Only access reliable sources of information.
There's so much advice I could give you, I don't even--
Mum brain 🧠 second:
Babies are not able to manipulate you. They simply have no understanding of and mechanism of doing it. They simply have NEEDS, and extremely few ways to express them. Nappy changes are a need. Feeds are a need. Sleep is a need. Boredom is a need. Loneliness is a need. Fear is a need. Touch deprivation is a need. Studies have shown that the more babies are positively responded to (i.e. their needs validated and addressed) in the early years of their lives, leads to more confident, less 'whiney' and happier kids: because they trust that when they need you, you will come. This doesn't only count for their parents.
Don't over-bathe: newborn skin hasn't developed its normal microbiome yet. Use of soaps and oils etc increases their chance of childhood skin allergies and infections. Simple warm water does fine, the majority of the time.
Babies adore just partaking in the regular daily shit you do. Carry them round on your hip as you do the laundry, the tidying, the shopping etc. Commentary it for them. They are utterly fascinated. Everything is new to them. It also develops their language skills brilliantly.
Do not stick your baby in a bouncer. Occasionally and for short periods: fine. Time on their back and on their tummy gets them stronger and more mobile faster. They will love it. Same with buggy use when they're bigger; as little as possible. They love to run. Yes, it's a pain in the arse catching them all the time, but damn it's great to see three year olds fit and healthy and happy because they're so active.
Practice your nursery rhymes and silly voices. Don't be embarrassed to use them.
Watch Bluey. In advance. It's Amazing Parenting 101, and actually it's wonderful and hilarious.
Blippi is an educational fucking vacuum. Ms.Rachel is an educational fucking powerhouse.
Education starts at home. Positive attitude to reading and learning goes a very fucking long way.
Baby-led weaning is wonderful. Look into it.
Purple Crying is a thing. Look into it.
Parental Burnout is a thing. Look into it.
Do your pelvic floor/Kegel exercises. Do it. Fucking do it. I'm watching you. Do it. I have a knife.
Holding their fat feet to your ears and saying "Hello? HELLO???" is hilarious for all involved.
If in doubt, create 'Monster Hand'. Encourage your child to have 'Baby Monster Hand'. Mod meltdown, my child being dragged into a game of 'Monster Hand' saves the day, especially if they're being ridiculous. Bonus points if Monster Hand is largely non-verbal and acts like a naughty goose.
Don't start 'Elf on the Shelf'. Just fucking don't.
Be goofy. Often. Prepare to embarrass yourself.
Positive redirection is much more effective than shame and negative reinforcement to encourage good behaviour.
Tumblr media
Good luck, my love. I'm a font of more useless information, whenever you like.
Many congratulations on your new impending addition, Auntie to Be!
Love,
-- Haitch xxx

'Banana'
[FC] [JAPAN] [MAGAZINE] [1986]
"I have kind of a funny history (well, it's funny to me anyway) with Banana. For the longest time, I thought it and Takara's rather lackluster-looking platformer, Banana Prince, were one and the same. Then I came across (on Famicomblog) a photo of this game's packaging that made it clear the two titles were unique entities. As for what prompted me to give this oddly named Famicom game a go: Well, the aforementioned packaging, which features an adorable mole wearing white gloves and what appears to be a pair of blue jeans, certainly got the proverbial ball rolling, but what kept it moving along was [a now deleted] YouTube video. Admittedly, said video [made] Banana look more than a little rough, but that's rarely deterred me in the past. Also, I'm one of those weirdos who actually likes the aesthetics of severely retro games. Anyway, it wasn't just the colorfully chunky graphics that attracted me to Victor Interactive Software's maiden Famicom release. I also liked the looks of its gameplay, which at first called to mind such classics as Adventures of Lolo, Dig Dug, Magical Puzzle Popils and Wrecking Crew. In the end, those comparisons aren't completely apt. A better one, I quickly came to learn, would be to compare it to First Star Software's Boulder Dash. That 1984 release is a cakewalk compared to Banana, though, thanks to the latter's devilish, "you'd better make the right moves in the right order--or else!" mentality. Speaking of which, you'd probably like an explanation of how this pixelated puzzler plays, wouldn't you? The gist: You control the strangely dressed mole I mentioned earlier. He's plopped into each stage for some reason or other (sorry, I don't know the game's backstory--assuming there is one) and is tasked with gathering all of the fruit that's been deposited throughout each level (again, for some reason or another), retrieving the blue-haired lady mole who seems to be his girlfriend or wife and then somehow making it to the exit door. That's harder than it sounds, of course, thanks in large part to the game's sense of gravity--which means that whenever you dig or fall or otherwise move in a downward direction, the only way you can move up again is to find a ladder and climb it. And if you can't? Hit the reset button and start over, because you basically got yourself stuck. Oh, and most stages include boulders that, should you walk beneath them (and you will), fall into your path and make life even more challenging for you and your mole-y friends. The good news among all of this doom and gloom: Banana is a lot of fun despite its sometimes brain-melting difficulty. Partially responsible for that are the game's cheerful (if basic) visuals, although the appealingly blippy background music, which calls to mind both Donkey Kong and Mario Bros., deserves a quite a bit of credit, too." ~ @gaygamer

korean media resources for beginners! 🇰🇷
comprehensible input, vaguely in order of easiest to most difficult. on the CI wiki and lingotrack. here's the list for only the easiest stuff (for day-one learners). as we're finally over 20 resources, i noted favorites!
태웅쌤 - Comprehensible Input Korean ⭐ 35+ hours; starting with his superbeginner playlist & leveling up to his many video game playthroughs, the most popular CI channel.
KIWI-Korean Input With Images’s ⭐ 4 hours; starting with his 101 playlist, incredibly clear & simple narration style.
C.K.W.M. / Min - shorts/tiktoks.
Breeze Korean ⭐ 6+ hours, super high quality.
Pronounce Korean ⭐ 15+ hours; great channel for beginners! clear, repetitive, prolific.
몰입한국어 Immersion in Korean 1-2 hours of pre-intermediate content; short stories repeated thrice.
Master Vocabulary Korean 5+ hours; varying quality, repetitively describes pictures in short videos.
시나브로 한국어 - Learn Korean through Immersion <1 hour; just a couple of videos but decent quality.
Comprehensible Korean 3-4 hours; regular draw-and-narrate CI, decent quality.
Storytime in Korean 2+ hours; calm & pleasant channel.
한글용사 아이야 ⭐ 70+ hours; kids show, i love my hangul power rangers.
Comprehensible Korean Language ⭐ 24+ hours; starting with his beginner playlist, mostly video game playthroughs. recommended if you find 태웅쌤 - Comprehensible Input Korean too difficult!
Muzzy in Gondoland 2-4 hours; i really only recommend the first six episodes. technically requires a subscription but offers a free trial, pretty famous for English learning & has a Korean version.
short DIY videos [playlist example]
Blippi Korean 블리피 ⭐ Easy preschooler show, dubbed. Lots of nouns & easy verbs.
Numberblocks 넘버블럭스 Obviously great for numbers (both native and Sino-Korean!), but the short dialogue is also really clear. A bit heavy on songs but overall super watchable, dubbed.
Peppa Pig in Korean 32 hours; famous for language learners, dubbed.
Pocoyo Narration overlaying six-minute adventures with rare dialogue interjections, dubbed.
search term 룸 투어 for room tours [example one, two] ⭐
Tayo the Little Bus 꼬마버스 타요 and the spin-off Titipo Titipo 띠띠뽀 띠띠뽀 The public transit vehicles are surprisingly expressive, and the conversations are very predictable/intuitive.
Bluey 블루이 ⭐ This is wonderful input even if you don't like kids shows - it's funny, sweet, and short. Better streamed than on youtube, but really truly great. Dubbed.
DIY videos
more and more kids shows If you don't like one, try another! There are a billion preschooler shows, and you're unlocking them at this level. They're usually short and simple, and might make a great break from language learning content.
podcasts made for learners I'll review & list these separately as I listen to them, but at this point they're all too advanced vocab-wise.
free IPTV streams infomercials! very fast, but very repetitive. fun to have on in the background.

Gimolas head canon and drabbles
So I am writing short little blippy drabbles about Gimli and Legolas. I have several ideas that I'm attempting to flesh out as I read the Lord of The Rings books. I am on Return of The King now. I have finished the Hobbit, The Fellowship (more like the Fuckin-ship, am I right???), and The Two Towers in that order. I plan on reading other works too, as well as, reading the appendix of them. Dear gods there's so much 😅. May write for other ships in the fandom too. IDK yet?????
But, point is got some thoughts about these two. I think this is how they would be together when not having to put up a front for fear of judgement. There's a lot. But, tell me what y'all think?
Legolas
Legolas is a They/them. I always got nonbinary vibes from them. But, I don't think they are aware of it yet until they leave their home to discover their truest self. Yes, I think they will play with drag in varying degrees depending on their mood as well.
I think because of his upbringing in the forest, they have had to push down most of not all vulnerability. Thus, being shoved into a world outside of their father's eyes allows them to be more expressive. Hence, why they make some strange facial expressions and behave awkwardly with others. They are essentially learning to become social in ways that matter rather than continuing superficial socialization that they are accustomed to.
In private, when they think no one is looking they embrace sensitivity. Solitude in their mind is a thing of safety to at their softest. Inside they realize just how loving they are of those around them. They easily weep often in private over a variety of things. Over time they realize they are a very emotional person and a very capable warrior. Learning to balance these qualities has become an interesting struggle for them.
once allowed to be themself I imagine them to be snarky and mischievous in affectionate ways. They may even play pranks on you provided that they love you enough. The chaos is strong with them.
They do have a lot of clueless niece moments too. But, they make up for it via their sweet personality and caring energy.
Once they are married the elven way I think the crave it constantly if you know what I mean 😏. In that same vein I think they discover they are not vanilla too.
Gimli
I definitely agree he is BAMF not a clown.
He had a heart of gold and loyal golden retriever boyfriend energy. I think he would do anything to preserve the happiness of his lover and friends. This may actually cause him problems from time to time. The wrong person may take advantage of his selflessness. (Legolas I think is extremely protective of Gimli because of this.)
Because, of his upbringing I think that duty was placed very heavily on him. So, I think, he probably takes that too far. So far that he let it over take his life. Because of this, I think the journey he goes on will help him understand the purpose of why he carries out his duties. Yes I understand he has friends and family but they all I would think live a similar life of duty as well.
The fellowship, might be a little bit of a wake up call for him. Duty without happiness is quite a hollow way to live.
I also picture him to be a hopeless romantic. He's the type to cheese it up just to make his lovie happy. I think he is also the type to only refer to his lover by name if he wants to be serious. So yes, our boy Gimli gives off heavy affectionate vibes in my opinion. Despite popular beliefs that dwarves are rowdy, sweaty, and vulgar all the time; I think Gimli cleans up damn good on his own accord for his lover. He's secretly a perfect gentleman.

What type of Christianity do you follow?
-The Bible kind (eye roll ), Jesus not a man (which I guess is the polite way to say fuck bill got hard), they worship in a baptist church
(Austin makes a quip about how if the mic had a clip he could put it in his beard)
Is Austin still flipping houses?
-No
How many kids do they want?
-4-5, joy doesn’t “feel done” yet
Have you considered moving out of Arkansas?
-Not seriously but if God called them they would (I would love an in-depth explanation of how one knows when God calls one to do something like moving far away …..)
Are they still IBLP?
-No! Never as a couple and they spoke early on in their relationship of not using IBLP “literature” and such. “Have our own relationship with the Lord” -joy
Are they doing a name theme with sons? Gideon, gunner…
-No, Gunner was almost named Bowman James and they didn’t realize both boys wound up with G names until after they’d written gunners birth certificate
Are they going to read jills book?
-Yes! Joys already read jingers book. “If your family member wrote a book about your family would you read it? Duh!”-Austin
Dream vacation?
-Alaska!
What does it mean to put God first in your home?
-Honestly all they answered was just…. Barely coherent. Be the same in the home as in church? Whatever that means? Teach the children about him? That’s not vague. Keep the home pleasing to Him? Give me one (1) specific on how to do that I beg y’all!!! And then there’s a spiel about praying…
Do joy like Austin beard?
-yes but she’s getting bored with it. And then there’s a Totally Healthy banter about how joy was going to shave it of while he was asleep (impossible but ok) but Austin threatened to do the same to her eyebrows so she’s dropped the idea
The key to a successful marriage?
-Fight for your marriage, but fight together and not against each other. Austin is apparently very good at apologizing
Does Gideon like his swim classes?
-yes
What is evelyns favorite song?
-blippi, cocomelon…..
What has Gideon been learning about in Bible time?
-Old Testament stuff! King Solomon and monotheism
What is Gideon’s best joke?
-First he says VBS, then Sir laugh a lots
What does Evelyn want to be when she’s bigger?
-a princess!

Looking out the window with a non verbal kid of mine at work, talking to her about seeing all the buds popping up on trees, how nice the weather is when it’s not too hot or cold, lamenting my allergies, talking about bees etc.
Her on her AAC (iPad with an app that lets her talk)
“My name friend”
“Yep, you’re my bestie”
Later on, a coworker who’s new “idk why she’s so violent.”
“What? Like when she hits or kicks?”
“Yeah I just don’t get it”
“Well wouldn’t you get angry when you’re trying to say something and people can’t understand? Or when the only way you can talk dies because the battery is shit?”
“Oh. Yeah that would make me angry.”
“Same. Also the whole being talked down too by everyone. I mean she’s 9 and a pre teen and everyone talks to her like she’s a baby.”
They nod, frowning.
Like, the new people learn pretty quick that the kids we work with have huge personalities and actually understand everything we’re talking about. Theres a reason everyone we work with talks to them like we would anyone else (age appropriately) and get extremely protective of these kids. All of us have a massive hatred of health insurance because they can’t get the care they need and their families struggle. The 5yo who’s been on a billion different meds that affect his mood and already limited impulse control because for his age, he destroys rooms when he’s angry, punches kicks etc. but like? I would too?
And the 9yo above? She has seizures multiple times a day. A device that barely stops them. She can’t use the bathroom on her own. She can’t talk. Her motor control is very limited. And she’s hitting puberty. She knows damn well what we’re talking about.
But she has interest that are so fun. A crush on blippi. And if she really likes you she’ll ask you to do her hair. She laughs hysterically when she runs off and she’s faster than you. Her favorite colors are orange and pink. When she isn’t feeling good she’ll take a nap and hold your hand or cuddle with you. She has preferences of which clinicians work with her.
These kids aren’t babies who can’t understand anything. They’re people and it drives me insane when people don’t see that. I get frustrated sometimes and fuck yes it hurts to get punched in the face or have chairs thrown at you. But it doesn’t last.
Idk just thoughts at 2:17am and had a dream about a kid that got taken out of our care who I had grown really close too.

I was looking at the tags for the post, and all of those things do exist still, just in different ways. Things like Blippi and Meekah, Martha Speaks, etc..are shows that can help children with reading and comprehension. However, it is also on the parents to help their children as well. I have a three year old, she has a tablet. She is only allowed educational games and shows, and she's only allowed it between the hours of lunch and supper. We have learning time in the morning, she can recite her ABC's and she's working on recognizing and writing the letters, she can count to 10, she can tell how many of something is in a group, and alot of this is because she watches things like Blippi and Meekah. We have reading time every night before bed, she is a wildly imaginative child and reading has definitely helped her come into that, watching shows and playing learning games on her tablet as well as what i am able to teach her has helped her have amazing critical thinking skills for a freaking toddler, this child amazes me more and more every single day with things that i teach her and things that i havent even thought to teach her yet.
Tablets are helpful to most parents, and i would be lying if i said there were a few days where i let her have it outside of her normal times just so i was able to get some housework done quickly or my own schoolwork without her hanging on me, that doesnt make me any less of a parent. I'm sure your parents also plopped you in front of the television and turned a movie on to keep you entertained for a while so they could get business done.
However there are parents that just hand a tablet to their child and dont have any part in their important learning milestones. There are children who don't know how to read when they go ito the education system because their parents don't bother to help them and that is a bigger issue. Focus on those parents, not just any parent that gives their child screen time. That is not because the education system is flawed, that is because education starts first at home. It is much harder to teach a school aged child the basics of phonics and reading (how to sound small words, etc..) than it is to teach a toddler by taking an hour or so out of your day as their PARENT to help them.
I hate that the "Gen Alpha can't read." conversation so much because people are taking this as a chance to call children stupid and their parents monsters instead of having a very real discussion about how the education system is flawed by design, covid fucked up everything socialization wise, these parents having little access to child care and more work hours leads them to lean on things like tablets and phones to watch their kids more and more, teachers are more overworked and underpaid than ever leading to them leaving the profession in droves and that's only like the surface level issues. There's a myriad of factors at play here, not just that "The kids are spoiled screen-addicted brats with no imagination and their parents are childish spoiled millennials who just let coco melon handle everything."

Our child enjoys playing pretend. Usually they will run around and say they are a baby, or a mommy, or baby blippi, or anything else. This weekend they have mostly been "baby screwdriver".
But this morning they are "Super Screwdriver" and their name is Shank. When asked where they heard the word Shank they claimed they learned it from "bad guy screwdriver".
